We check the "code" stored by the ECU with a diagnostic scan tool, which is basically a computer used to talk to the car's computer. Anyone that works with computers knows they can be misleading and plain flat stupid at times. Therefore, the code can only point us in the direction of the problem. Many times the first step is to document the code, visually inspect the system indicated and clear the code from the ECU. If the code returns, which could take seconds, days, or weeks, we will start in on the diagnostic procedures.
